The backyard is a mud pit from November to April, and you want a patio you can use in summer. Green Tree Landscape and Maintenance is a landscaping company serving Tualatin and the south and west Portland metro. We build paver patios and walkways on a compacted gravel base and a smooth bed of sand. Each one slopes so rain runs off.
Our hardscape work also covers paver steps and landings, plus flagstone garden paths. On a sloped lot, a patio may need a block retaining wall to hold a level spot. We work about 10 to 15 miles around Tualatin, including Tigard, Beaverton, Lake Oswego and Wilsonville. Call or text (971) 772-9892, and we will look at the yard and put the quote in writing.

Before any digging, the public utility lines get marked through Oregon 811. State law sets that request at least two business days ahead. Utilities mark only their own lines, not private sprinkler or drain lines. Then the old lawn and soil come out, and a gravel base goes in and gets compacted in lifts.
October through May brings nearly 9 of every 10 inches of rain here. Aloha silt loam, common in Tigard and Beaverton, can hold water 1 to 2 feet below the surface. The paver industry's construction guide sets a 4-inch minimum base for a patio on well-drained soil. On wet or weak soil it calls for a thicker base, with geotextile fabric where needed.
Next comes about 1 inch of bedding sand, screeded flat. The same guide rules out stone dust for this layer. The pavers go down in the pattern you pick, with edge restraints along the outside rows. Joint sand gets swept in, and a plate compactor seats the pavers until the joints are full.
A patio plan starts at the back door. We look at where you step out and how much room the table and chairs need. Then we plan the shape with you, square or curved, so it fits the yard.
Rain has to go somewhere. Section R401.3 of the Oregon residential code covers this. It calls for a hard surface within 10 feet of a house to slope at least 2 percent away. That is about a quarter inch of fall per foot, so a patio 12 feet deep drops almost 3 inches.
That water lands at the patio's low edge. If the lawn there is already soggy, a French drain or a channel drain can carry it away. We plan that before the base goes in.
A paver walkway gets the same kind of base as a patio, sized for foot traffic. It can run straight to the front door or curve out to the side gate. You pick the pattern, such as a herringbone or a simple running bond.
Where the yard changes level, paver steps and landings connect the patio to the lawn or the door. Low-voltage step lights make them easier to see on long winter evenings.
A flagstone path uses flat pieces of natural stone in uneven shapes. We set the stones on a compacted gravel base, with gravel or low plants in the gaps.

We come out to see the yard and where the water runs. For the maintenance program, we look over the lawn and the beds.
You get the quote in writing, with the work spelled out. Once you say yes, we set a start date, and work days follow the weather.
Then the work starts, whether that is an install, a build or your first maintenance visit. On a new landscape, the soil is prepped and graded before anything goes in the ground.
We take a final look at the work with you, and the site is cleaned up. Then we go over what comes next, like watering new sod or the date of the next visit.

The base under a paver patio is compacted in layers before the first paver goes down. Retaining walls get drainage gravel and pipe behind them. We install the backflow assembly the code requires on every new sprinkler system.

Carlos and team did a great job on our new paver patio and pathway. Communication was excellent and responses were quick. He shared examples of options and asked questions along the way to make sure we were getting what we wanted. We'll use them again for future projects without hesitation.
We had a great experience working with Carlos and his team. Carlos was professional, reliable, and easy to communicate with throughout the entire project. His pricing was very reasonable, and I really appreciated his attention to detail. He took the time to make sure the grading and sod installation were done correctly rather than rushing through the job. It’s clear Carlos takes pride in his work and cares about doing things well. We would absolutely hire him again and highly recommend him to anyone looking for landscaping or yard work.
He was very good. Review our system and did an upgrade. Checked all sprayer heads and adjusted as needed. He was very professional and efficient. Great job. Would recommend he to anyone who has a sprinkler issue.
