Low-voltage LED lighting for long winter nights

In December the backyard is dark by 5, and the patio steps are hard to see. Landscape lighting puts light where you walk. Green Tree Landscape and Maintenance installs low-voltage LED landscape lighting across the south and west Portland metro. Path lights line the walkways, and uplights reach into the trees.

We are a Tualatin landscaping company that also builds block retaining walls and patios. Step lights and wall lights are simplest to add while a wall or patio goes in. Every system runs on low voltage from a transformer. Any new outdoor outlet or circuit is work for a licensed electrician.

What We Handle

  • Path lights along walkways and garden paths
  • Uplights aimed into trees and across walls
  • Step lights set into block steps
  • Wall lights under the cap of seat walls and retaining walls
  • A transformer that steps household current down to low voltage
  • A photocell that turns the lights on at dusk, with a timer for the off time
  • LED fixtures on low-voltage cable in a shallow trench
  • Lights added to a finished yard or built into a new patio or wall

What Goes Into a Low-Voltage Landscape Lighting System?

Every system starts at the transformer, which steps household current down to low voltage. It mounts on a wall or post near an outdoor outlet. From there, a low-voltage cable runs to each light in a shallow trench.

A photocell turns the lights on at dusk. A timer turns them off at the time you pick, or the photocell can run them until dawn. The photocell follows the season, so the lights come on earlier in December than in June.

The fixtures use LED lamps. The U.S. Department of Energy says LEDs use about 75 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. Path lights and uplights sit on stakes, so they can move as the plants grow.

Landscape Lighting Installation for Patios and Retaining Walls

On a new paver patio with a seat wall, the cable runs behind the block before the cap goes on. Step lights go into the face of each block step the same way. On a new landscape, the lighting plan fits in with the planting beds and paths.

Our photos show a block seat wall at dusk with small lights set just under the cap. The light washes down the block and across the patio.

Path lights stand along a walkway and throw light down onto it. Uplights sit at the base of a tree or wall and aim up. We place and aim each light around how you use the yard at night.

Outdoor Lighting Installation for Tualatin's Long Winter Nights

The U.S. Naval Observatory puts the winter solstice sunset in Tualatin at about 4:30 in the afternoon. The shortest days land in the middle of the wet season. A path light or step light shows where the walkway turns and where each step begins.

A finished yard can take landscape lighting with little disturbance. The cable goes into a narrow trench along bed edges and under the lawn. Oregon law requires a request to Oregon 811 before digging, so buried utility lines get marked. The request goes in at least two business days ahead.

How We Work

How a Job With Green Tree Runs

From the first call or text to the finished work, here is how it goes.

1

Call or text

Call or text (971) 772-9892 and tell us about the yard and where it is. Send photos if you like.

2

We look at the yard

We come out to see the yard and where the water runs. For the maintenance program, we look over the lawn and the beds.

3

The written quote

You get the quote in writing, with the work spelled out. Once you say yes, we set a start date, and work days follow the weather.

4

The work

Then the work starts, whether that is an install, a build or your first maintenance visit. On a new landscape, the soil is prepped and graded before anything goes in the ground.

5

The finish

We take a final look at the work with you, and the site is cleaned up. Then we go over what comes next, like watering new sod or the date of the next visit.

FAQ

Lighting Questions, Answered

Common questions about lighting around Tualatin and the south and west metro. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (971) 772-9892

Do I need an electrician for low-voltage landscape lighting?
It depends on the outlet. The transformer usually plugs into an outdoor outlet with ground-fault protection. Where it needs a new outlet, a licensed electrician adds one first. We work on the low-voltage side, from the transformer out to the lights.
Why choose low-voltage lighting over line-voltage lights?
A low-voltage system runs through its transformer, so the house wiring usually stays as it is. A light can often be added later on the same cable if the transformer has room. LED lamps use little power. Line-voltage lighting runs on household current and belongs with an electrician.
Can you add landscape lighting to a finished yard?
Yes. Path lights and uplights go in on stakes wherever the cable can reach. Whether an existing block wall can take lights under its cap depends on how it was built. We look at the yard first and tell you what fits.
What upkeep does landscape lighting need?
LED lamps last many times longer than incandescent bulbs, per the U.S. Department of Energy. Plants grow over path lights, and staked fixtures get bumped, so the aim needs a check now and then. A wipe of the lens keeps the light bright.
Do you install landscape lighting in Portland?
Yes, on Portland's west side and in the close-in southwest. Tualatin sits at the center of our service area, and we work about 10 to 15 miles around it. That covers Beaverton, Tigard, Lake Oswego, West Linn, Wilsonville, Oregon City, Happy Valley, Clackamas and Milwaukie. Our service areas page lists every town.
How much does landscape lighting cost?
The price depends on the number of lights and the kind of fixture. Long cable runs and lights set into block add to the work. An electrician's visit for a new outlet is a separate cost. Call or text (971) 772-9892, and we look at the yard and put the quote in writing.

New plantings, lawns, paver patios, retaining walls and drainage all come from one company. We can keep up the yard we build on our maintenance program.

One flat rate for all 12 months

Our landscape maintenance program runs all year at a flat monthly rate. The rate stays level through the quiet winter months and the busy leaf season.

Built to the standard

The base under a paver patio is compacted in layers before the first paver goes down. Retaining walls get drainage gravel and pipe behind them. We install the backflow assembly the code requires on every new sprinkler system.

Carlos and team did a great job on our new paver patio and pathway. Communication was excellent and responses were quick. He shared examples of options and asked questions along the way to make sure we were getting what we wanted. We'll use them again for future projects without hesitation.

We had a great experience working with Carlos and his team. Carlos was professional, reliable, and easy to communicate with throughout the entire project. His pricing was very reasonable, and I really appreciated his attention to detail. He took the time to make sure the grading and sod installation were done correctly rather than rushing through the job. It’s clear Carlos takes pride in his work and cares about doing things well. We would absolutely hire him again and highly recommend him to anyone looking for landscaping or yard work.
