Artificial Turf Installation in Tualatin, OR

Artificial Turf · Tualatin, OR

Artificial turf for the spots where grass gives up

Green Tree Landscape and Maintenance installs artificial turf for backyards, side yards, play areas and dog runs. We are a landscaping company serving Tualatin and the south and west side of the Portland metro. Turf fits where grass keeps losing, like deep shade under firs or a path the dog wore bare.

Most of the work in a turf lawn happens below the turf. We dig out the old lawn and build a compacted rock base that lets rain drain through. In our job photos, the turf sits beside paver patios and block retaining walls, and we build both. Call or text (971) 772-9892 and we will look at the yard.

What We Handle

  • Old lawn and roots dug out before the base goes in
  • Crushed rock base, packed firm with a plate compactor
  • Base graded so water moves away from the house
  • A drain line where clay subsoil holds water
  • Seams glued on seaming tape under the backing
  • Edges fastened down where turf meets a bed or a patio
  • Infill brushed in to help the blades stand up
  • Pet turf for dog runs, with drainage through the backing

How does artificial turf drain in the wet season?

Artificial turf in the Portland area has to handle a lot of rain. At Portland's airport, October to May brings nearly 9 of every 10 inches of the year's rain. Water runs through holes punched in the turf backing, then down through the crushed rock base. The rock carries the water until it soaks into the soil or reaches a drain.

The ground under the rock decides the rest. In the Tualatin Valley, many soils sit over slow-draining subsoil, and some hold winter water a foot or two down. We grade the base so water moves away from the house. Where the ground stays wet, we add a drain line.

Some yards need more than a good base. When a backyard stays soggy from November to April, a French drain may need to go in first. We look at where the water comes from before the turf goes down.

Artificial grass for shady lawns and dog runs

OSU Extension notes that most grasses struggle in the deep shade of buildings or under groups of trees. Shade and poor drainage also promote moss, which starts growing here with the fall rains. That is how a lawn under firs and maples ends up more moss than grass by March. Turf needs no sun, so it stays green under the trees.

Dog runs are another good fit. Dogs wear paths into a lawn, and bare paths turn to mud in the wet season. With turf, urine drains down through the backing into the rock base, like rain does.

Turf also suits a play area in a side yard or a back corner of the lot. Kids get a green surface to play on instead of bare dirt.

What happens during turf installation?

It starts with a look at the yard and a written quote. Oregon law requires notice through Oregon 811 at least two business days before digging. Then the old lawn and roots come out, and fabric goes down where the soil calls for it.

Crushed rock comes next, packed firm with a plate compactor and graded to drain. The turf arrives in rolls. Seams are glued on seaming tape laid under the backing, and the edges are fastened down.

Last, infill such as sand is brushed into the fibers. It helps the blades stand up and holds the turf in place. The site gets cleaned up, and we take a final look at the turf with you.

FAQ

Artificial Turf Questions, Answered

Common questions about artificial turf around Tualatin and the south and west metro. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (971) 772-9892

How much does artificial turf installation cost?
The price depends on the size of the area and how much lawn and soil come out. Access matters too, because the rock has to reach the backyard. A drain line and the turf you pick also move the number. We look at the yard and put the quote in writing.
Is artificial grass good for dogs?
Yes, with turf made for pets and a base that drains. Pick up solid waste as you would on grass. Rinse the dog area with a hose now and then so urine flushes down through the base.
Does artificial turf get hot in the summer?
Yes, in full sun on a hot afternoon. OSU Extension reports that grass can be far cooler than synthetic turf on a hot day. Turf in shade stays cooler, and shade is where turf often makes the most sense here.
Does artificial turf cost less to keep than a lawn?
Turf takes less upkeep than a lawn. It does not need mowing, fertilizer, aeration or reseeding, and it skips summer watering. OSU Extension puts a perennial ryegrass lawn at about an inch of water a week in summer. Turf still needs leaves blown off and a brush now and then to spread the infill evenly.
How long does artificial turf installation take?
A small dog run is a shorter job than a full backyard, and easy access helps. Most of the time goes into the ground work: the old lawn comes out and the base goes in. Laying the turf and brushing in the infill come last. Work days follow the weather.
Should I choose sod or artificial turf?
Sod gives you real grass, and it grows well in sun with regular mowing and summer water. OSU Extension says grass will likely not grow well with less than 4 hours of direct sun a day. Below that, turf is the better fit. A yard can have both: a new sod lawn in the sun and turf under the trees.

Carlos and team did a great job on our new paver patio and pathway. Communication was excellent and responses were quick. He shared examples of options and asked questions along the way to make sure we were getting what we wanted. We'll use them again for future projects without hesitation.

We had a great experience working with Carlos and his team. Carlos was professional, reliable, and easy to communicate with throughout the entire project. His pricing was very reasonable, and I really appreciated his attention to detail. He took the time to make sure the grading and sod installation were done correctly rather than rushing through the job. It’s clear Carlos takes pride in his work and cares about doing things well. We would absolutely hire him again and highly recommend him to anyone looking for landscaping or yard work.
