Sod Installation in Tualatin, OR

New sod lawns that start with the soil

Green Tree Landscape and Maintenance handles sod installation for homes in Tualatin and across the south and west Portland metro. Maybe the lawn is patchy and full of weeds, or the builder left a thin lawn on packed soil. We take out the old lawn and weeds, then lay new sod on graded soil. Sod gives you green grass the day it goes down.

Sod still needs steady water for the first weeks while its roots grow into the soil. A lawn is easier to keep wet with a new sprinkler system put in before the sod. If the whole yard needs a redo, sod can be one part of a full yard makeover. Call or text (971) 772-9892, and we look at the yard and put the quote in writing.

What We Handle

  • Old lawn and weeds stripped out down to bare soil
  • Soil loosened, then raked and rolled to an even, firm grade
  • A grade that sheds water away from the house
  • Sod laid green side up with tight, staggered seams
  • Rolling to press the new sod onto the soil
  • A plan for the first weeks of watering
  • Overseeding and lawn renovation for thin lawns
  • A new sprinkler system before the sod when the yard needs one

New Lawn Installation, Step by Step

OSU Extension says sod belongs on a carefully prepared bed. That prep is most of the job. We strip the old lawn and weeds, then loosen the soil. We rake and roll it until the grade is smooth and evenly firm.

OSU says Willamette Valley soil is often a silty clay or clay loam. Tilling wet soil ruins its structure, OSU warns, so work days follow the weather. We shape the grade so water runs away from the house.

We moisten the soil just before the sod goes down, as OSU advises. Each piece goes green side up with the edges butted tight and the seams staggered. Then we roll the lawn to press the sod onto the soil.

What Grass Grows Best for a Lawn Around Tualatin?

OSU Extension recommends a mix of perennial ryegrass and fine fescue for sunny lawns west of the Cascades. The ryegrass fills in fast, and the fine fescue handles some shade. OSU lists tall fescue as a drought-tolerant grass for full sun. We pick the sod for the sun your lawn gets.

Grass needs sun. OSU says turfgrass will likely not grow well with less than 4 hours of direct sunlight a day. Western Oregon's mild, wet winters also feed moss, which peaks in early spring. That is how the lawn under the trees can be mostly moss by March.

When a spot cannot get that sun, OSU says redesigning it without turfgrass may be the best option. Artificial turf stays green under trees where grass fails. Poor drainage thins grass too, OSU notes. A backyard that is a mud pit all winter may need a French drain or a catch basin first.

Lawn Renovation and Overseeding for a Thin Lawn

OSU says most neglected lawns with decent grass cover can be saved without starting over. Overseeding fills thin spots by spreading seed over the lawn you already have. Lawn renovation goes further. We rake out the thatch and dead grass, then level low spots and reseed.

OSU names spring and fall as the best times to overseed. OSU's lawn guide calls mid-August to mid-September almost perfect for seed in the Willamette Valley. New seed needs daily water for at least two weeks.

When the lawn is mostly moss or weeds, or the grade is wrong, new sod is the cleaner fix. Once it roots in, our year-round maintenance program can pick up the mowing and fertilizer.

FAQ

Sod Questions, Answered

Common questions about sod around Tualatin and the south and west metro. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (971) 772-9892

When is the best time to lay sod in western Oregon?
OSU Extension says sod can go down from about mid-March through mid-November in western Oregon, given a well-prepared bed. OSU gives sod the same best windows as seed: mid-August to mid-September, then early May to mid-June. In the wet season, we wait until the soil is dry enough to till.
How often should I water new sod?
OSU says to soak it the day it goes down, then water at least daily for a couple of weeks. Lift a different corner each time to check the soil and the new roots. Edges along sidewalks dry out first. We plan the first weeks of watering with you.
When can I mow a new sod lawn?
Mow once the sod has rooted in and the grass needs a cut. OSU suggests about 2 inches for perennial ryegrass and 3 to 4 inches for tall fescue. Hold the water for a day or two before mowing so the soil firms up.
Do I need new topsoil before sod goes down?
OSU Extension says most native Oregon soils have enough fertility and pH for turf. Its advice is to keep the existing soil when you can. A lot where building stripped the topsoil is different: OSU says to test that soil or bring in new soil. OSU also warns against tilling sand into clay to loosen it.
Do I need a sprinkler system for new sod?
New sod needs water at least daily for the first couple of weeks. A sprinkler system on a timer keeps that schedule for you. We can put the system in before the sod goes down.
How much does sod installation cost?
The price turns on the lawn's size and how much old lawn has to come out. The grading and soil work matter too, along with any sprinkler system or drainage the lawn needs. We look at the yard and put the quote in writing. Call or text (971) 772-9892 to set up a visit.

We had a great experience working with Carlos and his team. Carlos was professional, reliable, and easy to communicate with throughout the entire project. His pricing was very reasonable, and I really appreciated his attention to detail. He took the time to make sure the grading and sod installation were done correctly rather than rushing through the job. It’s clear Carlos takes pride in his work and cares about doing things well. We would absolutely hire him again and highly recommend him to anyone looking for landscaping or yard work.
